Thursday: It’s All About the Socks

Hi All! Is it just me or do the weeks seem to keep flying by? I remember when I was a child, time was so much slower. The long days of Summer, playing outside with friends, drinking iced tea brewed by the sun, swimming in the lake and the millions of other things we did as a child. Now that I’m older, I appreciate the lazy, carefree days of summers of the past more than ever and wish I could get back to them (if only I didn’t have a job and a million other adulting things to do…not that I want to lose my job…goodness no!)

What got me thinking about all of that? Today is my Aunt Karen’s 62nd birthday and she is finally retired. I was able to Facetime with her this morning and it was a joy to see her so relaxed and happy, getting back to those carefree days of our youth and finally able to spend time with my cousin, Nichole. So Happy Birthday, Aunt Karen and Happy Retirement too! May you finally have the peace and comfort that you have brought to countless others in your golden years 🙂 Not that you’re old or anything! LOL

Oh, and yeah, it’s a Thursday too. I bet you thought I was trying to fill up my blog post with reminiscing and had totally forgotten about my socks. Nope! Not gonna do it! Believe it or not, I actually got a lot done this week. I’m about half way through the Monster for my nephew…so I’m pretty stoked! My husband was away a lot with band practice and that makes for perfect, uninterrupted knitting time!

So, how far did I get with my socks? I finished the foot and the gusset! What? Yeah, I can’t believe it either! Now, I know some people can whip out a pair of socks a day. I’m just not that type of person, so this is a major accomplishment for me. I’m working a heel type that I’ve never worked before and although kind of freaked out about it, I’m just following the pattern and going one stitch at a time. What I really love about this heel is that there are no stitches that will need to be picked up. What? Yeah, you heard that right! If it works out, I may try this heel again and again because I dislike picking up stitches 🙂 That means no holes, right?

Just a reminder, I’m working on the Amy’s Favorite Toe Up Socks pattern, which is a paid for pattern on Ravelry. I’m debating on making these shorties for the summer instead of knitting a leg. If I do that, it just means I can start the next pair of socks sooner. Stay tuned for more on that.

If you haven’t noticed, I’m linking up with my friends Hannah, who blogs at unsophisticated+jejune and Alex who blogs at alexand knits for our regular Thursday sock party. I’m not sure if either will have a post up today; however you can check them out and see what other goodies they are working on! And a big welcome to the newest member of our sock knitting group! Katherine of Fiber and Sustenance has added a fantastic post about After Thought Heels…this is her first sock post joining up!

Until next time, Happy Knitting!

I just started knitting my first ever pair of socks. So far I’ve manged the cuff, the heel flap and I’ve turned the heel. Now I’m at the point where I need to pick up stitches for the gusset, a process that makes me nervous. I’m intrigued by this no-picking-up-stitches heel you’re working on. Good Luck! Can’t wait to see the finished product.

    1. YouTube videos helped me a lot when I first had to pick up stitches! I am intrigued to see how it works out too 🙂 Thank you for much for the good wishes! I’m hoping to get them finished before my next sock post. BTW, do you want to join us for our Thursday Sock Knitting Adventures? If so, just let me know and I’ll link you up on the next post! If not, I’m glad that you are reading and look forward to when you do post!

  2. They really do look lovely. I would say do a cuff because the yarn looks so squishy soft and the color is so pretty, you might as well have more of them! I can’t wait to see how the heel turns out! I’m looking forward to doing my next pair TAAT toe up.

    1. I was definitely thinking of a ribbed cuff on them…I don’t want them rolling down my feet 🙂 Thank you for the kudos!!! I’m in love with the color and the yarn.

  3. mmmm…. they are looking good! You have done so much! I’m amazed at how knitting two at a time works still. Unbelievable! Well done, I’ll see if I can get a sock post going up next week – I’ve missed so many! 🙂

    1. Thank you so much. I love working on them two at a time so I don’t get second sock syndrome. The only thing that can’t really be worked in this manner is the actual heel because of the short rows. I’ll explain more about that in my next post. Don’t feel any pressure to get a sock post up! I know you have a lot on your plate right now and are still getting settled. Unless you use some sock knitting to relieve stress 🙂

Really lovely socks and such a striking blue! I have been contemplating recently that I haven’t really knitted many socks and how they would be a good travel knit since relatively small (especially for my petite feet!) Thanks for some inspiration! /Christina

    1. Thank you, Christina! You have to check out my most recent sock post to see the finished result 😀 They really are a fantastic travel knit and it’s lovely having homemade socks in your drawer. If you want to start knitting socks and linking up on Thursdays, just let me know! We inspire each other to continue on, even if something doesn’t work out.
