Thursday: It’s All About the Socks

Hi All! Another week has flown by. Luckily, it’s a short work week because of Independence Day…which also allowed me some extra knitting time! I’m about to start the decreases on the monster I’m making for my great nephew, Athan. It’s turning out super cute and hopefully I’ll blog on the finished project soon.

This is Thursday, so let’s get to the socks. Last week, I discussed that I might make them shorties. I did and they are finished. Woo hoo! I am absolutely in love with the way they turned out and I learned a lot making them. Here’s the info:

Ravelled Here: Amy’s Favorite Toe Up Socks

Started / Finished: 5/4/16-7/4/16

Needles: US 2 – 2.75mm (2 – 24″ ChiaGoo Red Lace)

Yarn: Madelinetosh Tosh Sock in the Color Baltic

Techniques New to Me: Figure Eight Cast On, Two At A Time (TAAT) Toe Up, Gusset / Heel Construction of this pattern (I loved it because there were no stitches to be picked up!), Unbind off (can’t remember if I’ve done this before; however I had to look up how to do it), attaching new yarn in the middle of a bind off.

Wow, that’s a lot of new techniques under my belt! You might ask why I had to unbind off and attach new yarn in the middle of a bind off. Well, silly me made a newbie mistake and bound off in a non-stretchy bind off following the ribbed pattern. I had cut my yarn when I decided, hey, you better try those on. Yep, you guessed it. It wouldn’t fit over my heel. I had to undo my bind off and ran out of yarn when doing JSSBO. Here’s a pic of where I was when I had to attach new yarn. So close, but there was no way I was getting to the end with that little bit.

In addition, I now know that instead of just starting the rib section directly after the heel, I should knit a couple of rows of stockinette. I had two little holes on each side of the foot since I decided to immediately start the 2×2 rib. Luckily, these were easily fixed with some additional sewing. I wish I could discuss the heel construction, as I thought it was one of the easiest heels I’ve ever completed. Since this is a paid for pattern, I can’t really do that. I did do a Google search to see if I could find a name for the type of heel; however couldn’t find anything. It might be time to check my sock pattern book.

After washing and blocking, the toes are a little loose; however the rest is a perfect fit! Once I finish the monster, I will decide which pair to cast on next. I have a lot in my queue and can’t wait to get started on the next pair! I’m thinking of the Blueberry Waffle socks…but that may change by next week.
