Thursday: It’s All About the Socks

Hi All! Another week has flown by. Luckily, it’s a short work week because of Independence Day…which also allowed me some extra knitting time! I’m about to start the decreases on the monster I’m making for my great nephew, Athan. It’s turning out super cute and hopefully I’ll blog on the finished project soon.

This is Thursday, so let’s get to the socks. Last week, I discussed that I might make them shorties. I did and they are finished. Woo hoo! I am absolutely in love with the way they turned out and I learned a lot making them. Here’s the info:

Ravelled Here: Amy’s Favorite Toe Up Socks

Started / Finished: 5/4/16-7/4/16

Needles: US 2 – 2.75mm (2 – 24″ ChiaGoo Red Lace)

Yarn: Madelinetosh Tosh Sock in the Color Baltic

Techniques New to Me: Figure Eight Cast On, Two At A Time (TAAT) Toe Up, Gusset / Heel Construction of this pattern (I loved it because there were no stitches to be picked up!), Unbind off (can’t remember if I’ve done this before; however I had to look up how to do it), attaching new yarn in the middle of a bind off.

Wow, that’s a lot of new techniques under my belt! You might ask why I had to unbind off and attach new yarn in the middle of a bind off. Well, silly me made a newbie mistake and bound off in a non-stretchy bind off following the ribbed pattern. I had cut my yarn when I decided, hey, you better try those on. Yep, you guessed it. It wouldn’t fit over my heel. I had to undo my bind off and ran out of yarn when doing JSSBO. Here’s a pic of where I was when I had to attach new yarn. So close, but there was no way I was getting to the end with that little bit.

In addition, I now know that instead of just starting the rib section directly after the heel, I should knit a couple of rows of stockinette. I had two little holes on each side of the foot since I decided to immediately start the 2×2 rib. Luckily, these were easily fixed with some additional sewing. I wish I could discuss the heel construction, as I thought it was one of the easiest heels I’ve ever completed. Since this is a paid for pattern, I can’t really do that. I did do a Google search to see if I could find a name for the type of heel; however couldn’t find anything. It might be time to check my sock pattern book.

After washing and blocking, the toes are a little loose; however the rest is a perfect fit! Once I finish the monster, I will decide which pair to cast on next. I have a lot in my queue and can’t wait to get started on the next pair! I’m thinking of the Blueberry Waffle socks…but that may change by next week.

We’ve got quite a bevy of others joining up in our weekly Thursday Sock knitting adventures. So exciting! If you would like to join in, just link to your next Thursday sock post and let us know so we can add you too!  I’m going to take note from Alex and put them in a list for you:

  1. Well Done Paula! I’m so glad you got a finish in! They look great, and summery too because they are short. Perfect! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Hannah! I worked on them a lot over the weekend because I really, really wanted to have a pair of finished socks for this post. That darned bind off was almost my undoing 😀 I’m looking forward to wearing them all summer long!

      1. I can’t believe how close you were to having enough yarn! That is so funny – but I bet it was not at the time. I thought I would have a finish too as I thought it was Wednesday today, but next week! 🙂

      2. Oh, I have tons of yarn left…almost half the ball. Thank goodness for that! Unfortunately, I cut the yarn when I thought I was finished and then found out the bind off was too tight. At least it’s another skill learned 😀

      3. D’oh! I read that totally wrong. Yes, I was so close! But, no cigar…LOL

  2. These are adorable! I love handknit ankle socks. And the color is just gorgeous. It’s awesome that you learned so many new techniques on this pair.

    1. Thanks, Katherine! I love the color too 😀 I have just under a half a skein left and may make another pair later…just slightly smaller. This is my fourth pair of socks completed (I had to frog one pair because they were too tight and I have a HO with another pair), so I learn something new every single time. I only started knitting in February of 2015, and although I’ve learned so much in that time, I know that I still have a ton to learn! Maybe my whole lifetime 😀

      1. Wow, I can’t believe you’ve just been knitting over a year! It took me a very long time to try to knit socks. I made my first pair over eight years ago, but haven’t made that many pairs since … two or three for myself, and a few ask gifts. I’m hoping that will change now with the sockalong. I want that whole drawer full of handknit socks!

      2. I tend to jump in with both feet and want to try to make everything 🙂 I also want a whole drawer full of homemade socks, therefore I blunder on…making mistakes; however getting better day by day! The weekly sock along has definitely spurred my desire to keep knitting socks. I’m so glad you’ve joined us!

These look great Paula! And I love that color. You’ve learned quite a few techniques with this project. That’s the great thing about knitting, you’re constantly learning something new.

  4. They look so good!! Congrats on getting pair #4 done! If you want, you could use the rest as a cuff/heel/toe contrast color on another pair, if you don’t want to make a smaller size. I have that pattern (I think I got it for free at some point) so I’ll have to check out the heel construction and see what it’s like!

    1. Thank you, Alex! I could do that too…and have some leftover for the Cozy Memories blanket that I want to start. I received the pattern for free also. I think it was at Christmas time last year when everyone was going crazy giving away patterns.
