Hi All! Another Thursday has rolled around it it’s time to talk about the socks! As you probably already know, I am currently working on the Smooth Operator Socks by Susan B Anderson. I have been able to work on them exclusively since Sunday of this week, as I finished my baby cardigan on Saturday. Everything went into the mail to my niece on Monday and I can’t wait to see what she thinks.
I didn’t want to start any new projects until the start of the Olympic Knitathon that is being hosted by Andrea at This Knitted Life, so it really has been all about the socks this week. All the details are included in the link and it starts tomorrow if you want to join in. I still haven’t decided on the yarn or pattern, so I need to get a move on! (Alex, I just noticed that we are participating in different games for the Olympics…now I understand why you were confused by one of my comments 🙂 )
I wish I could say that I have finished socks…I find that I tend to slow down when knitting socks. My speed isn’t there yet; however I know the more I practice, the better it will get. It took me 60 rows of stockinette to get to the 6 inch length for the leg (I was at 36 rows in the last post). I inserted the waste yarn and have knit 7 rows of the foot. I need to get to 2-3 inches past the waste yarn before I go back and work the heel and estimate that will be approximately 29 more rows.
You can see from the pictures below, the waste yarn for the afterthought heel (isn’t that pretty yarn?) and how much progress I have made since the last blog post with the progress keeper. Not too shabby!

Wow, they’re coming right along! They look lovely! It’s weird knitting them TAAT–it seems like they’re taking forever, but all of a sudden they’re both done!
You can easily get away with only knitting about 1″ past the waste yarn before doing the heels, if you want.
You’re right, now your comment about the Knit Olympics/Ravellenic Games makes more sense!

Thank you! That’s what I keep telling myself 🙂 TAAT does take longer; however, it’s totally worth it when you have two finished socks at the end. I was going to ask about the 2-3 inches thing. Thanks for letting me know.

I love the idea of a progress keeper — what a fun way to keep track from week to week! That contrast yarn is so cute with the socks … little things like that make me extra happy when knitting 😀

I like it too! It really helps me to see how much I’ve accomplished from week to week. That waste yarn was from a Sockhead Hat I did last year. I wish it wasn’t discontinued because I would love to have more of it to make a pair of socks.
