Once Upon a Sock: May Edition

Hi All!

What do you think of the cool new graphic for our header? Thanks go out to Stefanie (see below for the link to her blog!) for creating it and sending it to all of us to use in our monthly Once Upon a Sock posts! I think it’s super cool 🙂 I’ve also decided to copy some of my fellow sock knitters and use the month in the title versus the sock pattern.

Last month I showed you my progress on the Baby Mitten Socks and my Smooth Operators. I finished the Baby Mitten Socks; however need to tell you a little story. While we were in Hawaii, I must have been fascinated by the view because I accidentally doubled the heel length in the sock I made. I happened to notice that I did the same exact thing when I made my first pair of these! However, at that point, both socks were the same, so no worries.

I decided this weekend that I would get that second sock completed so I could blog about them today and lo and behold, after I finished, I noticed a marked difference in heel size!

See the difference in the back of the heel? The sock on the left was completed in Hawaii and the sock on the right was completed on Saturday.

So, did I read the pattern wrong this time? Or did I read it wrong the other three times I’ve made this sock? Since it’s a free pattern, I’ll post the part here. For the pattern, she uses a different color for the heels; however I’ve been making them a solid color.

Heel
With contrast yarn, k16 sts, placing them onto one needle. You will work back and forth on this needle for the heel.
Next: k1, p14, k1. K 1 row.
Repeat these 2 rows for a total of 11 rows, ending with a ws row.

Now, the first time I made these socks, and the first sock of this pair, I knit 22 rows for the heel. However, when I knit them on Saturday, I read it to knit for a total of 11 rows (which is exactly what is says) and that’s what I did. I think I knit it correctly on Saturday, which makes sense because you pick up 9 stitches later in the pattern. All I know is that I I couldn’t leave it as is. I had extra sock yarn, so I decided to knit another sock on Sunday. I’m sending the sock I knit in Hawaii, just so Mama can have that sock too…she may want to frame it or something 🙂

Needles Used: US 2 (2.75 mm) and US 1 (2.25 mm)
Yarn Used: Kat’s Kettle Toes Etc. in the color Anna Plantain
Started Finished: 3/15/17 – 4/30/17 (I really completed the final pair this past weekend)

I also made some progress on my Smooth Operators; however this is already long, so I’ll save it for next month when I hope to have even more!

Also, have you seen these AMAZING Hogwarts Socks? OMG…I about died when I saw them! (Pattern picture is © Pauliina Mathlin, the Designer of the socks!) The pattern is also FREE!!!!! Once I get some free time, I am going to have to make these.
